What happens if someone revokes an open source project / license that other businesses depend on?

I’m no legal expert but one popular open source license is the MIT license which allows others to reuse, extend, modify, etc. the code for a project— even for commercial purposes. But what happens if the owner of that project decides to revoke the project or change that license? I tried googling around but can’t find a straight answer. Would out company need to stop using any derivatives of that code? Would we be in legal violation? Or is it fair game to continue business as usual?
