Help ranking for US and UK search terms from one domain

Good day all my question hopefully has a simple answer for you all.

I have a new project I am working on, I am UK based and have always targeted UK traffic. The niche I am in is low competition and has a good monthly search volume in the UK however after some more research the same terms are also low competition in the US except the monthly search are much higher sometime as high as 15x what the UK’s are.

So my question is what is the easiest way to rank for the one term both in the US and UK.

I have a .com domain my idea was to create a subfolder of /us and then duplicate all my posts and put them in there. I would also change the words slightly so they are US so I would change the spelling of certain words and change some words like ‘sweets’ to ‘candy’. As well as that I will add hreflang tags to the articles (I know how to do this )

My main query is will google see my content as duplicate content as there will only be slight changes or will the hreflang tag prevent this? Also will it even work will I be able to rank for both US and UK terms effectively using just one domain and a subfolder?

Thanks in advance for any advice given.
